Is CBD Safe for the Family?

Often, we think of CBD as having potential benefits for elderly or sick family members. The truth is CBD can benefit people of all age groups. CBD is often used by physicians to compliment other medications, and since CBD is all natural, there are no known harsh side effects, unlike many prescribed medications.

As with anything new, CBD oil should be started in small doses, and gradually increased as stated on the bottle or the manufacturer's website. This goes for all age groups.

CBD Oil for Adults

There are many potential uses for CBD oil in adults.  Many report benefits such as reduced pain and inflammation, less anxiety and depression, more ease in quitting substances such as nicotine and narcotic pain relievers, and of course seizures.  It is most often used for the promotion of general health.

● Anxiety and Depression - CB1 and CB2 are two receptors that CBD is thought to interact with. Both of these receptors are found in the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System. CBD may be known to alter the CB1 receptors which can alter serotonin1 (low serotonin levels are common with people who have depression, and in some instances may cause anxiety). Common medications to combat anxiety and depression are Zoloft and Lexapro, which are only available with a Doctor’s prescription. CBD is an over the counter oil available to take instead of, or to compliment an SSRI, but your physician should be made aware to confirm if CBD would be the best option for you.

  • Inflammation and Pain - The most common benefit patients report when using CBD is reduced joint and muscle pain.  CBD interacts with CB2 receptors which help to modulate inflammation and immune function, both of which can impact pain levels.

  • Benefiting Heart Health - CBD contains anti-inflammatory properties along with antioxidant properties that have been found to help lower the risk of heart disease, such as high blood pressure, and may even reduce the risk of having a stroke2. In a 2009 study completed by Dr. Leonardo Resstel, it was noted that CBD was found to lower both blood pressure along with heart rate. As always, speak to a healthcare professional before attempting to manage your high blood pressure with CBD.

● Diabetes Prevention - Research is still being conducted on how much CBD helps with diabetes prevention. CBD may aid in controlling blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes. It was found that CBD was able to lower cholesterol, increase insulin production, promote “good fats”, and lower inflammation, which is common in individuals with diabetes, especially in the lower legs.

CBD Oil for Seniors

With aging comes the possibility of arising health issues. Senior citizens are starting to turn to CBD instead of pharmaceutical medications to help with joint/muscle pain, as a possible aid in prevention of Alzheimer’s, and to help with sleep disorders.

● Joint/Muscle Pain - There have been numerous studies completed that point to CBD being a viable treatment for joint and muscle pain4. CB-2 receptors are cells that are found in the immune system which help our immune response and reduce inflammation. CBD was found to bind to those receptors to help reduce discomfort and improve relaxation in the entire body which will help with pain relief, and even sleeping.

● Alzheimer Patients - Recent studies have shown CBD’s ability to reduce or even remove oxygen buildup and inflammation build up in the brain which is the core cause of Alzheimer’s and Dementia5. According to Alzheimers.org.uk CBD may also help agitation and aggression that Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients will encounter6.

● Sleep Disorders - Sleep is always an important part of life, and CBD has been thought to help decrease muscle spasms which can cause interrupted sleep patterns7. Although CBD may not be a “cure-all” for sleep disorders, it may be an all-natural alternative method to help regulate the sleep and wake cycles.

CBD Oil for children

We try our best to do what is right for our children. We encourage them to exercise, provide them with healthy food, and if possible, the best medical care. In some cases CBD has had positive results in relation to medical conditions such as Epilepsy, Seizures, and Autism.

● Seizures/Epilepsy - According to the University of Alabama of Birmingham 50% of 50 children saw improvement in seizure control after consuming CBD, while 2 patients remained seizure free8. While the results of this study are a positive indicator of CBD’s effectiveness in helping a number of underlying medical concerns, it’s always best to speak with a health professional to see if that is the best route for your child to take.

● Autism- It should be noted first that CBD cannot “cure” Autism, but it may be able to help with some of the associated symptoms. CBD may help improve sleep patterns which in turn can help reduce irritability, and lessen anxiety, which are two of the most common behaviors individuals with autism struggle with9.

Final Thoughts

CBD is an all-natural product that has a host of benefits for adults, seniors, and even children, and it will not provide a “high” that is commonly associated with cannabis. Even though CBD is known to be safe, a physician should always be consulted to make sure CBD is a viable solution for you. Currently there are no known side effects to taking CBD oil, and you should always start out in low doses and gradually increase the dosage over time.
